-
- 1. Install
- ----------
- - Drivers for SCSI cards must be installed and loaded to burn an
- image to a SCSI CD burner.
-
- - If you are a system administrator and are installing DeployCenter
- for multiple users, you must ensure that all users have launch
- permissions. If users are unable to run the DeployCenter
- applications, you must run DCOMCNFG.EXE as Admin, go to Default
- Security, and specify launch permissions for the users.
-
-
- 2. ImageCenter
- --------------
- - ImageCenter may not run properly under Windows 95a. If
- you encounter problems running under Windows 95a, run ImageCenter
- from the rescue disks.
-
- - You should not load EMM386 before running ImageCenter. Doing so
- could dramatically increase the time required to create and restore
- image files. EMM386 is not loaded by default.
-
- - To create an image to a CD-R, you must load HIMEM.SYS
- in the CONFIG.SYS. Do not load EMM386.EXE. Before starting
- ImageCenter, you must also load PQPACKET.EXE. This file is
- included on the first rescue disk. It is also installed to
- \Program Files\PowerQuest\ImageCenter 5.0\PQPACKET.EXE. If
- you start ImageCenter from its icon in the DeployCenter program
- group or from the first rescue disk, both HIMEM.SYS and
- PQPACKET.EXE are loaded automatically and no further action is
- required by you.
-
- - When an add-on IDE controller is installed, PQPACKET may not
- detect the devices attached to the add-on controller. The
- Ultra 100 from Promise Technology is one device that is not
- detected; there may be other cards that are affected by this
- limitation.
-
- - CD-R write is limited to 4x speed. If you experience slower
- burning speeds, switching to Gold media may improve ImageCenter's
- performance.
-
- - It is not necessary to load a CD-ROM driver to create OR restore
- an image on CD on a CD-R or CD-RW drive. During the create or
- restore process, go to the browse dialog, drop down the list
- of drives, and select the entry that starts with \\.\PQCD
- followed by a number and a description of the drive.
-
- - Sometimes when restoring an image from a spanned CD set, if
- you insert the next media and then press <Enter>, the message
- "the media does not contain the correct file" appears. Click
- OK. ImageCenter will read the media again and continue
- to restore the image.
-
- - Older CD-R and CD-RW drives may have a problem when
- burning images to CD; ImageCenter may report an error 1805.
-
- - When you image a very large partition, the progress bars,
- time elapsed, and MB transferred may not display properly.
-
- - You must note the following issues if you restore a Linux image
- to a system that had a different operating system installed
- previously. The first sector of the drive receiving the Linux
- image must be cleared before the Linux master boot record (MBR)
- can be installed. Second, you must specify that the MBR be
- installed from the image for the system to boot properly. You
- can modify the AUTOEXEC.BAT file on the first rescue disk (or
- the boot disk you are using instead) to include the /MBR
- switch for ImageCenter.
-
-
- 3. PowerCasting
- ---------------
- - The native Windows 32-bit PowerCast server will not run
- under Windows 95a or in a Token Ring environment.
-
- - If the clients do not see the Windows PowerCast server when
- PowerCasting across a router, increase the TTL value (in the
- Advanced Options dialog) in the server, then restart the
- server. (It is not necessary to exit the PowerCast server.)
-
- - To run the Windows PowerCast Server from Windows 95, you
- must have WinSock2 installed. If the version of Windows 95
- you are running does not include WinSock2, you should go to
- www.microsoft.com and download the updated software.
-
- - If you PowerCast to a machine that has the original 3Com
- 3c905 card, you must modify your PowerCast boot disk to
- use the original driver. The 3c905c driver that is
- included with Boot Disk Builder will not work with machines
- that have the original card. If your PowerCast boot
- disk includes the 3c905c driver, the machine with the
- original card will not connect to the PowerCast server.
-
-
- 4. Task Builder
- ---------------
- - If you use the CreateImage command in a task, ensure that
- you choose a filename that is eight or fewer characters and
- does not include any spaces or extended characters. If you
- run a task that includes a long filename for an image, Task
- Builder will not run ImageCenter, and the task will end
- at a DOS prompt.
-
- - Make sure you have the very latest drivers for network cards.
-
- - There are several requirements that must be met if you run a
- task from CD-ROM: 1) If a task is run from any non-writeable
- media, you must specify an OUTPUT file. 2) If a task includes
- operations that require DOS (such as running PQIMGCTR), the
- correct CD-ROM drivers must be loaded in DOS at run-time. To
- avoid not having the CD-ROM drivers available when the task runs,
- you can create a task that does not have an initial Reboot command
- or has a Reboot command that only runs if NOT in DOS and then uses
- a Win9x boot disk that includes CD-ROM support. Be aware that
- network access is not available with a typical Win9x boot disk.
- Much of Task Builder is intended to work over a network. 3) If
- the CD drive letter is different in DOS than it is in Windows, the
- task will fail. There is a TaskLoc=? that is set at run-time. If
- the CD drive is I:\ when you run the task under Windows and is
- F:\ under DOS, the task will lose track of where PQDOTASK is
- located and will fail.
-
- - If you use PartitionMagic 5.0 with Task Builder, you cannot use any
- commands after the PMScript command in Task Builder. If you have
- PartitionMagic 6.0, you are not affected by this limitation.
-
- - If a task does not run (error 15) when using UNC paths, shorten
- the path to the location where the task is being run from or where
- the images reside. DOS limits the number of characters on a
- command line.
-
- - You can use the CommandLine operation in Task Builder to run a
- batch file or executable. If you wish to run a DOS command, you
- should include the command in a batch file, then specify the batch
- file in the CommandLine operation.
-
-
- 5. Boot Disk Builder
- --------------------
- - Make sure when creating disks with Boot Disk Builder that you
- start with a clean, formatted disk.
-
- - To add a NIC driver to the list of drivers, you must select
- both the NetWare/PowerCast and MS Client options if you want
- to use both NetWare and Microsoft clients.
-
- - Most NIC driver disks include multiple INF files. If the first
- one you use does not work, keep trying INF files until you are
- successful.
-
- - If you want to use a reference disk to create a virtual floppy,
- HIMEM.SYS must be included on the disk and loaded from the
- CONFIG.SYS. If HIMEM.SYS is not loaded, the virtual floppy will
- not work correctly.
-
- - If you select a Madge NIC driver when you create a Microsoft
- TCP/IP boot diskette, we recommend that you create a generic boot
- disk to use as a reference disk. This will ensure that the driver
- and the minimum necessary boot files will fit on a single diskette.
- The reference diskette should contain the Madge driver file and the
- following minimum boot files, based on the version of DOS you are
- using:
-
- MS-DOS 6.22
- -COMMAND.COM
- -IO.SYS
- -MSDOS.SYS
- -HIMEM.SYS
-
- Caldera DOS
- -COMMAND.COM
- -IBMBIO.SYS
- -IBMDOS.SYS
- -HIMEM.SYS
-
-
- 6. Creating Image Files
- -----------------------
- Your hard drive jumpers must be set up so that you have a
- master drive and a slave drive. DeployCenter will report
- incorrect drive information if the jumpers are set up in a
- cable select configuration.
-
-
- 7. Creating and Resizing Partitions
- -----------------------------------
- ImageCenter includes the ability to create and resize
- partitions with a script file.
-
- Create - Creates a partition in the selected unallocated
- space. This command is useful if you have deployed an image
- to a blank machine, but the image file does not fill the
- entire hard disk. You can create a partition to make the
- remaining unallocated space usable. You must have unallocated
- space on the selected hard disk to create a partition on it.
- (Be aware that you cannot create a FAT16 partition larger
- than 2039 MB.)
-
- Resize Extended - Resizes the extended partition on the
- selected disk to the size you specify or to the maximum size
- possible.
-
- Resize Partition - Resizes the selected primary or logical
- partition to the size indicated or to the maximum size possible.
-
- See Chapter 14 of DCMANUAL.PDF in the English/Docs folder
- on the DeployCenter CD for additional information about
- these commands.
-
- 8. DeployCenter User Guide
- --------------------------
- The PDF version of the DeployCenter user guide (DCMANUAL.PDF)
- is more correct than the printed version. You may wish to
- search the PDF version for the most up-to-date information.
